Kami is a relaxing yet challenging game app that hits the sweet spot in many ways. We found that it gave us a much-wanted mental break without putting our brains on sleep mode. Perfect, right? We love Kami for a couple of reasons: First, it’s a visually stunning puzzle app. Secondly, it’s got a soothing, contemplative quality to it that’s perfect for calming monkey mind. Have a kid stressed on studying? Having a hard time focusing a wandering mind? Some time spent on Kami puzzles might do the trick.
Beautifully created, with clever folding-paper sound effects to match, Kami doesn’t come with instructions, so there may be a bit of a learning curve at first. But, hint, here’s all you actually need to know: The goal is to turn the entire screen into the same color with a given number of steps by touching papers and letting them unfold. Simple? It starts out that way, but once you delve into the puzzles, they become increasingly challenging. Once you’ve got the hang of it, it’s highly addictive while challenging sequential and spatial problem solving.
If you get stumped, you can buy hints on how to solve a puzzle. This may be annoying to some people who don’t want to pay, but we found once you purchase a few hints, you start to get the hang of it. There are a total of four level packs, each with nine puzzles. Does it warrant replay? A couple of times, but definitely not endlessly repetition. This app is great for middle school kids, although they may only want to play through the puzzles once or twice.
Looking for other ways to calm your mind? Stop Breathe & Think teaches kids the basics of meditation. This app takes kids out of the rat race of school, homework and friends with lessons on slowing down and focusing on breathing during guided meditation.
