One of our favorite experts on family dynamics and overall happiness is Christine Carter from Greater Good. In one of her new articles, she highlights three ways to combat the feeling of being entirely overwhelmed by the to-do list. (Hint: These are good for grownups AND kids.)
- Commit to rituals: Rituals help us feel a sense of control over our lives when the chaos threatens to overwhelm.
- Give yourself a shot of awe: Get inspired by something bigger than yourself to help regulate a cortisol-drenched mind. When researchers showed people videos of things like whales or waterfalls, it altered their perception of time such that those people felt like they had more time on their hands.
- Don’t multitask (or “find flow”): This is a hard one. Our constantly interrupted mind can’t relax and feel overwhelmed. Christine suggests building a “fortress against interruption” when possible. (No easy feat with a busy life but worth a try!)
