Want to transform your kid’s workout into an act of altruism? Charity Miles is a free running and distance tracker that donates money on your behalf to different charitable organizations across the globe. The premise is simple: Choose the charity you’d like to donate to — more than 40 charities includes everything from Feeding America and Save the Children to Autism Speaks — then select whether you’re walking, running, or biking. Charity Miles then tracks the movement of your phone and calculates the distance of your movements. Each mile is 10 cents for biking, and 25 cents if you are running/walking. You can also leave Charity Miles on while you’re going about your day to accrue yet more money while doing just about anything that requires movement.
So where exactly are these donations coming from? Charity Miles has amassed $500,000 in donations from multiple organizations, so each time you run, you are extracting from that pool of money and giving it to your charity of choice.
While it does require that you share location data in order to accurately calculate distance, the app claims that it does not share your data. Even so, parents should still take notice and be aware. Overall this is a great fitness app with a fantastic component: To exercise in order to improve your own condition, as well as the condition of others — one step at a time.
Charity Miles is just one of many powerful “pro-social” apps that connect kids to innovative ways of helping others, working towards a good cause and seeing things from other people’s perspectives. Research has shown that exposure to pro-social content can improve kids’ moods, sleep and helpful behavior. Discover some of our other favorite pro-social apps and websites here.
