Christoph Niemann, the famed creator of the “Petting Zoo,” is at it again with his latest iOS app CHOMP. This app literally lets kids get into the action by taking a picture of themselves and use it as the face of playable characters.
Kids and adults alike will have mountains of fun acting out funny animated scenes and playing along with the characters’ movements and actions.
Be sure to enable camera access for this app to work properly and get ready to take your character-acting skills to the next level as you try to keep up with the changing scenes and time your reactions to what is happening on the screen. Playable characters range from maestros to pandas to crying babies!
What Makes CHOMP a Good Buy
At first, I wasn’t sure what to make of this app. It’s certainly a novelty item. For parents looking to make the most out of their kids’ screen time, this app at first glance seems at odds with the “academics first” crowd.
That was my initial reaction. $2.99 and no studying? What’s this?!?!
It took me awhile to see that the value is in the absurdity and silliness of it all. There isn’t any learning objective being cleverly cloaked as gameplay; nor are there any lofty attempts to instill learning or meta knowledge that is supposed to set your child up to be a math whiz in five years.
It’s just good old fashioned fun — something that tends to get lost in the shuffle of academic pressure. Sometimes, having fun together is worth it for its own sake. Looking at this app in that way, it sure starts to seem like a real bargain at $2.99.
Go ahead and give CHOMP a try with your kids and HAVE FUN with it. An afternoon of silliness and laughs is priceless.
