There are no shortage of math apps out there, and we’ve tested enough to know our way around the ol’ addition, subtraction, multiplication and division grouping. Many of these apps seem to target kids in the early elementary age range — right when they tend to fall behind their peers. The research tells us that kids who fall behind in math at this age tend to never catch up, so high-quality apps like Monster Math 2 have the potential to help.
Monster Math 2: 1st – 5th Grade Level
Monster Math 2 is suitable for all grades in elementary school. Exercises are made with Common Core standards in mind. Unlike most math apps, however, Monster Math presents a storyline kids can play through while solving problems. Play as Maxx and rescue his best friend Dextra from monsters by answering questions correctly — it may not seem like an Academy award-winning story, but it sure beats other apps that are all-drills and no fun storyline at all.
The progressive problem-solving structure helps to ensure that struggling students are guided to the correct answer, learning along the way how to work through the problem step by step. There really is actual learning going on here — NOT just rote memorization. The gameplay is also adaptive, adjusting automatically based on how your child is progressing through the problems — important to avoid frustration and a potential iPad-throwing tantrum!
Most apps call on parents to do three things: 1) buy this app 2) hand the iPad to your kid and 3) go away. Not so with Monster Math 2! What truly separates this app from the pack is the parent involvement. Weekly email reports keep parents in the loop on how their child is progressing.
