This may be one of the coolest new apps out there: Tinybop (creator of two of our other favorites, Human Body and Plants) has come out with Homes by Tinybop, an open-ended, go-at-your-own-pace domestic discovery app. Here kids can explore four different kinds of residences: A Brooklyn brownstone, a Mongolian “ger,” an adobe home in Guatemala and a tower house in Yemen.
As with all of its apps, this one allows players to wander through interactive landscapes on their own. There are no goals or points, no leveling up. Instead, here you get to take a long and leisurely peek into a variety of homes where lots of unexpected surprises await. Tap on décor, foods, books, paintings and watch what happens. See your reflection in mirrors, and compare working models of plumbing and electricity across cultures and architectural styles. And there’s a linguistic bonus: common domestic words — bathtub, kitchen, window — are translated into 50+ languages!
