The Eric Carle art you have come to love has been brought to life in The Very Hungry Caterpillar for iOS. The app is based off the best-selling book by Carle, which is the most read book by children in Britain. The strength of this app lies in its great artwork and story narration, but it may not be for everyone — particularly kids nearing kindergarten age.
When it comes to design, this is a spectacular app! Based off the amazing artwork from Carle’s classic book, kids will no doubt enjoy the imagery, sounds and narration of the puzzle + book combination layout. The scenes are interactive and utilize 3-D touch technology to bring the art to life.
Great Learning Opportunity for Kids Aged 2-4
The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a great app to introduce a child to an iPad. It builds basic dexterity with simple side-scrolling puzzles and it asks children to make basic identifications like avoiding the “sweet” treats in favor of more caterpillar-friendly plant based snacks as they guide the hungry bug.
In between the puzzle games, the narrator reads about the basics of plant life and how the sun and soil work together to develop the seed. Animals and insects are also integrated into the storyline and puzzles to create a nice introduction to basic ecology.
The Limits of The Very Hungry Caterpillar
While kids up to the age of 5 may find the app visually appealing, it’s more geared toward kids between the ages of 2 and 4. If your child is 5 years old or close to that age, we would advise passing on purchasing this app.
That being said, this is a great “first” app for kids that are just getting familiar with an iPad.
