Living streaming apps such as Periscope and Meerkat may be grabbing most of the headlines as the media darlings du jour. But while they duke it out for market share among both high-profile and everyday users, another live-streaming service remains the undisputed winner among teens.
YouNow, the live social app, allows anyone (as in anyone) to broadcast, via mobile or webcam, to a live audience. And here’s the kicker: That live audience (read: complete strangers) can interact with YouNow broadcasters by asking questions and, yes, tipping them. With money. How? Viewers can pay tips to broadcasters with points purchased with real money through the app, and the performer gets real money as a tip.
Sound like a problem waiting to happen? Try spending ten minutes on YouNow. Or five. Or just 30 seconds on the app and you may very well stumble across extremely upsetting interactions. Think your child is too obsessed with gaining “likes” on Facebook? Try watching people rate you in real time as your dance, talk, walk or sleep!
And with 100 million user sessions per month and a recently released sleek new design, YouNow appears to be gaining momentum instead of losing it.
